Odessa is full of life. It has its own special character and is used to welcoming strangers. As the main port for Russia it was a melting pot for all the nations that arrived by sea—including one fugitive Brit who built the steps made famous in the Eisenstein film “Battleship Potemkin”. 
Sailors who mutinied over some maggoty meat on the battleship Potemkin were slaughtered by Tzarist guards, the tragedy horrifically depicted in Eisenstein's film. This is their heroic memorial.
