Sevastopol

This city is still defiantly Russian. It seems that the people did not want Ukrainian independence and still hanker after the old Union. It feels like a pre-Perestroika Soviet City. Sevastopol has to be visited for this and to see the impressive sweep of the harbour redolent of its long history as the home of the Russian fleet and of course as the setting of the heroic struggle of its citizens in the Crimean War against the French, British and Turks in 1854-55.

Sevastopol is still caught in the time-warp of its heroic past. It is indeed a hero city twice over, the last time during the 10 month seige by the Nazis.

Heroic monument to the defenders of Sevastopol in WW2

Till 1996 the City was closed to all foreigners but now the visitor can wander round freely and photograph even the Russian submarines.

A little way from the centre by the sea are the ruins of Chersonesus, an ancient Greek trading colony - then the largest on the Black Sea.

The cathedral of St Vladimir, who accepted Christianity for his people in 800

It was here that the founders of the Russian Orthodox church and of the Russian language, the monks Cyril and Methodius, arrived from Constantinople.
