Vizhnitsa

Explore the origins of Chasidism in and around the village of Vizhnitsa. This town was once a thriving Jewish community with a flourishing Jewish seminary and the important seat of the Vizhnitz rabbis till the 1930s. Sadly there are only 3 Jews living there now. The Synagogue is a local community centre and theatre.

A short way from the town near Chernogusy is a very old Jewish cemetery with the graves of several famous Rabbis from the Israel Hager dynasty kept under cover. These include: Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager died 1884 son of Rabbi Chaim of Kosiv, Rabbi Baruch son of above who died 1892, also Rabbi Feivish of Zelishtshik, also Rabbi Yisroel Shalom son of Rabbi Avraham Heshel.

An unusual gravestone depicting ritual hand washing

It is said that the Baal Shem Tov went into seclusion up in the hills nearby. He used this river, the Vyzhenka,as a place for ritual bathing even in the middle of winter. There is a place where visitors may also dip and perhaps take pebble as a memento.

It is accepted that this is the place which Baal Shem Tov used for ritual immersions
