Best Time to Visit

The weather is continental, that is to say subject to extremes. Temperatures in the Summer can soar in some places to over 40 Centigrade, while in the Winter extremes of less than minus 30 have been recorded. Generally late April to October is recommended.

Cash

Cash dispenser ATMs are everywhere in Ukraine so this is the most convenient and cheapest way of getting funds in the local currency Hryvna (UAH). In many places credit cards are still not accepted (hotels and restaurants excepted) - so by the check-out in the supermarket you will find an ATM. Usually the best exchange rate is offered using this channel but Credit Card charges are higher than Debit Card (Cirrus or Electron). £1 buys about 9 UAH. Currency converter

Internet

Ukraine is of course connected! There are internet cafes everywhere. If you have a lap-top its easy to connect. On every street corner you will find a student selling internet cards. Try SvitOnline. The registration is a bit complicated but it's a reliable ISP. Find out more

Telephone

There are lots of mobile networks here, UMC and Kievstar are the main. Most UK mobiles set up for roaming before you leave the UK will be able to send and receive calls and SMS, but the charges can be very high. Everyone has at least one mobile here so communication is not a problem. A local SIM can be bought with about UAH15 of credit can be bought for about £8. This reduces the cost of calls within Ukraine and the cost of incoming calls from the UK. Find out more
